Disk Management

Disk Management.

Prerequisites.

> Minimum 2 Disk required for Spanned, Striped and mirror volumes 
> Minimum 3 Disk required for RAID 5 volume.

Steps to manage offline Disks.


> On Desktop Click on Server Manager ikon.


> Click on Tools and select Computer Management option.


> In Computer Management window select on Storage option and than select Disk Management



> In the following screen Disk1 ,Disk2 and Disk3 are Not Initialize Disks. Right click to disk 1 or any other Non initialized disk and select option Initialize Disk.


> Select Disks from the list for initialize and select GPT (GUID Partition Table) than click OK to continue.


> Once the Disk Initialized all the hardrive came online like following screen. Now all the disks are ready to create volumes.


Create Spanned Volume.

> Right click to Online Unallocated disk and select New Spanned Volume... option.


> Click Next to continue.


> From Available: disk option. Add > minimum 2 disks in Selected: column.


> Click Next to continue.


> From drop down menu assign drive letter to new spanned volume and click Next to continue.


> For File system: select NTFS option from drop down menu and assign Volume label: than click Next to continue.
Note: File system option is available with NTFS and ReFS. New ReFS file system support only by Windows 2012 only. Be make sure before selecting any file system.


> Click Finish to continue.


> Click Yes to convert Basic Disk to Dynamic Disk.


> Disk 1 and Disk 2 are converted to dynamic disk and start formatting in NTFS file system.


> Disk 1 and Disk 2 are ready with Spanned volume and drive letter E: is assigned.


> In My Computer E: drive is ready to use to store the data. Total size of the disk is 30 GB
Disk 1 :- 5 GB
Disk 2 :- 25 GB



Create Striped Volume.

> Right click to Online Unallocated disk and select New Striped Volume... option.




> Click Next to continue.


 > From Available: disk option. Add > minimum 2 disks in Selected: column.

 

> Click Next to continue.
Note: Disk 1 is 5086 MB and Disk 2 is 25470 MB but in Striped volume option select same space 5086 MB on each disk to create volume.


 > From drop down menu assign drive letter to new spanned volume and click Next to continue.


> For File system: select NTFS option from drop down menu and assign Volume label: than click Next to continue.


> Click Finish to continue.


> Click Yes to convert Basic Disk to Dynamic Disk.


> Disk 1 and Disk 2 are converted to dynamic disk and start formatting in NTFS file system.


> Disk 1 and Disk 2 are ready with Spanned volume and drive letter E: is assigned.


> In My Computer E: drive is ready to use to store the data. Total size of the disk is 10 GB
Disk 1 :- 5 GB
Disk 2 :- 5 GB



Create Mirrored Volume.

> Right click to Online Unallocated disk and select New Mirrored Volume... option.


> Click Next to continue.


> From Available: disk option. Click on Add > minimum 2 disks in Selected: column.


> Click Next to continue.Note: Disk 1 is 5086 MB and Disk 2 is 25470 MB but in Mirrored volume option select same space 5086 MB on each disk to create volume.


> From drop down menu assign drive letter to new spanned volume and click Next to continue.

 
 > For File system: select NTFS option from drop down menu and assign Volume label: than click Next to continue.



> Click Finish to continue.


> Click Yes to convert Basic Disk to Dynamic Disk.


> Disk 1 and Disk 2 are converted to dynamic disk and start formatting in NTFS file system.


> Disk 1 and Disk 2 are ready with Mirrored volume and drive letter E: is assigned.


> In My Computer E: drive is ready to use to store the data. Total size of the disk is 5 GB
Disk 1 :- 5 GB
Disk 2 :- 5 GB
Note: 5 GB size 9 1 Hard drive) is used for Mirroring and user can't access this space to store data.



Create RAID-5 Volume.

> Right click to Online Unallocated disk and select New RAID-5 Volume... option.


> Click Next to continue.


> From Available: disk option. Add > minimum 3 disks in Selected: column.


> Click Next to continue.Note: Disk 1 is 5086 MB, Disk 2 is 5086 MB and Disk 3 is also 5086 MB. In RAID-5 volume space 5086 MB is used for parity database and user can't access this space to store the data. Available storage space is 10 GB.
 

> From drop down menu assign drive letter to new spanned volume and click Next to continue.


> For File system: select NTFS option from drop down menu and assign Volume label: than click Next to continue.


> Click Finish to continue.


> Click Yes to convert Basic Disk to Dynamic Disk.


> Disk 1, Disk 2 and Disk 3 are converted to dynamic disk and start formatting in NTFS file system.


> Disk 1, Disk 2 and Disk 3 are ready with RAID-5 volume and drive letter E: is assigned.


> In My Computer E: drive is ready to use to store the data. Total size of the disk is 10 GB



Delete Volume.

> Open Computer Management than select Storage --> Disk Management option.


> Right click to online Dynamic Disk and select Delete Volume... option.


> Make sure data will take backup before deleting volume. Click Yes to continue.


> Volume is deleted now.
